I can only wish retro sports games modding explored this concept more often. while simultaneously creating new worlds of basketball in this gaming platform. While basketball fans could be disappointed with this move, as they would surely prefer to utilize the real college-level basketballers ingame instead of a bunch of computer-generated fakes, the fact is, such a decision allows this mod to become truly timeless, for it is therefore not dependent on the ever-changing rosters of these various universities over the years and decades. It features all the usual visual bells and whistles from team logos to jerseys and arenas but what truly makes this project (which is rather recent, given DaCrispy announced it just two years ago, many years after both the very last College Hoops game and NBA2K11 itself) shine bright is the innovative introduction of generic rosters for all teams. If naturally it would have been impossible to transport the entire College Hoops experience onto this NBA2K title, the author made sure everything in the base game was tuned in order to bring the NCAA, or at least part of it, here. This Retro Christmas week has come full circle, for we are back to where we started, before we traveled through time to check out a few of the great basketball games of the last decades: the one and only NBA2K11 is once again in the spotlight.Ī grandiose project whose scope is only comparable to one of the incredible FIBA 2K11 mod – one that sadly, might have been forever lost to time as there seems to be no more active download links around –, NLSC Forum’s DaCrispy sought to recreate part of the college basketball in one of the greatest basketball games ever, with his College Hoops 2K11 mod. Rapidly understanding that the scene was effectively dead, the virtual basketball modding community decided to take action. This is why a decade has passed since we witnessed the last spark of life coming from this subgenre. ![]() As the aforementioned (see yesterday’s Retro Christmas article about College Hoops 2K8) legal issues concerning the depiction of real college basketballers in these virtual games, who because of their amateur status were not financially compensated adequately – as the games profited off of their names and likenesses – made it impossible for any videogame developer to continue releasing USA college basketball simulations that resembled real life in any significant way. Neither disappearance had anything to do with unsuccessfulness if anything, curiously, this subgenre was helping leading the way when it comes to innovation and improvement of the whole sports gaming scene. Coincidentally, its niche rival, EA Sports’ NCAA Basketball, was also on its own farewell tour at that point, having finally disappeared from the scene – singlehandedly extinguishing it along with that departure – in 2009 with NCAA Basketball 2010, following more than a whole decade of competent college basketball depictions. ![]() The College Hoops series ended in 2007, with College Hoops 2K8 as its final but brilliant iteration.
